The LEFT() function calculates the substring of a given string starting from the left end. See also SUBSTRING, RIGHT

SELECT left('hello world', 5);
create.select(left("hello world", 5)).fetch();

The result being

Dialect support

This example using jOOQ:

left("hello world", 5)

Translates to the following dialect specific expressions:
