DENSE_RANK

Applies to ✅ Open Source Edition   ✅ Express Edition   ✅ Professional Edition   ✅ Enterprise Edition

The DENSE_RANK() hypothetical set function calculates the rank without gaps of the hypothetical value, i.e. dense ranks will be 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4 (RANK produces values with gaps, e.g. 1, 1, 1, 4, 5, 5, 7)

SELECT
  dense_rank(0) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY AUTHOR_ID),
  dense_rank(1) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY AUTHOR_ID),
  dense_rank(2) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY AUTHOR_ID)
FROM BOOK
create.select(
         denseRank(val(0)).withinGroupOrderBy(BOOK.AUTHOR_ID),
         denseRank(val(2)).withinGroupOrderBy(BOOK.AUTHOR_ID),
         denseRank(val(4)).withinGroupOrderBy(BOOK.AUTHOR_ID))
      .from(BOOK)

Producing:

+---------------+---------------+---------------+
| dense_rank(0) | dense_rank(1) | dense_rank(2) |
+---------------+---------------+---------------+
|             1 |             1 |             2 |
+---------------+---------------+---------------+
