ALTER DATABASE
Applies to ✅ Open Source Edition ✅ Express Edition ✅ Professional Edition ✅ Enterprise Edition
The only property of a database that can be changed, currently, is its name. In order to alter an database's name, use:
// Renaming the database create.alterDatabase("old_database").renameTo("new_database").execute();
Dialect support
This example using jOOQ:
alterDatabase("d").renameTo("e")
Translates to the following dialect specific expressions:
Aurora Postgres, CockroachDB, Postgres, YugabyteDB
ALTER DATABASE d RENAME TO e
ClickHouse
RENAME DATABASE d TO e
ASE, Access, Aurora MySQL, BigQuery, DB2, Derby, DuckDB, Exasol, Firebird, H2, HSQLDB, Hana, Informix, MariaDB, MemSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Redshift, SQLDataWarehouse, SQLServer, SQLite, Snowflake, Sybase, Teradata, Trino, Vertica
/* UNSUPPORTED */
(These are currently generated with jOOQ 3.20, see #10141), or translate your own on our website
IF EXISTS
A popular subclause of DDL statements that jOOQ can usually emulate, is the IF EXISTS
clause:
// Renaming the database create.alterDatabaseIfExists("old_database").renameTo("new_database").execute();
Dialect support
This example using jOOQ:
alterDatabaseIfExists("d").renameTo("e")
Translates to the following dialect specific expressions:
Aurora Postgres, Postgres, YugabyteDB
DO $$ BEGIN ALTER DATABASE d RENAME TO e; EXCEPTION WHEN SQLSTATE '3D000' THEN NULL; END $$
ASE, Access, Aurora MySQL, BigQuery, ClickHouse, CockroachDB, DB2, Derby, DuckDB, Exasol, Firebird, H2, HSQLDB, Hana, Informix, MariaDB, MemSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Redshift, SQLDataWarehouse, SQLServer, SQLite, Snowflake, Sybase, Teradata, Trino, Vertica
/* UNSUPPORTED */
